Lily and Sammy

Lily Evans, a first-time exhibitor, claimed the coveted Grand Champion title at the county fair this year with her Maine-Anjou steer, Sammy. The victory came after months of hard work, dedication, and guidance from mentors who helped Lily step into the world of livestock showing.

Evans, who had been working with Sammy for the past five months, shared how the experience of showing at the fair was both challenging and rewarding. “Sammy was a wonderful steer, and we really bonded over the last few months,” Evans said. “Mr. Stevenson inspired me to participate in the county fair. He asked me to show the chapter steer, and I was both excited and nervous.”

One of the most challenging aspects for Evans was the fear of disappointing others or making a mistake that could hurt either herself or Sammy. “The toughest part for me was loading Sammy onto the slaughter trailer. It was a lot of pressure, and I was worried I wouldn’t do it right,” Evans admitted.

Despite those concerns, the experience taught her valuable lessons about teamwork. “What I learned is that it’s all about teamwork. You and your steer are one; you just work together,” she said, adding that the bond with Sammy helped her feel more confident.

Lily’s victory was a testament to her perseverance and the support she received from her mentors. “Even though this was my first time as an exhibitor, I learned that nothing and no one can stop you from being great,” she reflected. “It’s important to remember that it’s your animal’s first time, too. No one is perfect, but we all start somewhere.”

Looking ahead, Lily is inspired to continue pursuing her passion for livestock and animals. “This experience has made me even more determined to become a livestock vet,” she said. “It was a wonderful experience, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Evans’ advice to anyone thinking of entering the world of livestock showing? “Even if it’s your first time, nothing is impossible. Keep working with your animal, and remember—champions start somewhere.”

Lily Evans’ journey to Grand Champion is not just about winning a title, but about the dedication and love she has for animals, and the valuable lessons learned along the way.

Hardee Middle FFA would also like to acknowledge that this could not have been accomplished without the support of our local community. A huge thank you to Heartland Growers and Hardee Ranch supply for the purchase of the steer. As well as a thank you to Mr. Stevenson, Mrs. Dubose and Mrs. Davis for all the knowledge and support that they pour into these kids.
